Random Player Remembered: Ray Fosse, 1970

Most people remember American League catcher Ray Fosse as the tackling dummy that took Pete Rose's now infamous charge into home plate during the 1970 All-Star game. Unfortunately, that was about all his career had to offer from that point on....

Fosse meets Mr. Rose

Earning his first of 2 All-Star nods, the Indians rookie hit .307 during the 1970 campaign with 18 homers and 61 RBI. The hit from Rose during the summer classic left the 23 year old phenom dazed and confused and apparently, that never seemed to wear off. Eight years of major league catching on four squads later, Fosse never could seem to duplicate his 1970 success. Despite his 2 gold glove earning, All-Star nod evoking, seasons of 1970 and 1971, Fosse finished his career in 1979 with a lifetime .256 batting average and a whopping 61 homeruns. Rose, on the other hand, now that is another story...
